30.9.24 Torrential rain streams down my windscreen as I cross back from East to West.  But I am still filled up with the flat sunshine of Suffolk fields; the sense of the enormous space of sky on a WW2 airfield. I have been artist in residence at Old Jet studios in Suffolk. The warmth of my welcome; the bright light and space in my temporary studio; the freedom to create away from responsibilities was a huge privilege and joy. My work focused on a figurative image I had drawn earlier from life: the woman sitting facing away from us, ‘grounded’ by the square wooden boards I was working on. Inspired by stillness, serenity, and a sense of myself, I created a series of paintings in a mixture of materials and of course colour. ...

Inspiration can come from anywhere – a place, a landscape, an urban landscape, an instinctive feeling. The urge to put these colours down in a particular order and in a particular way to create an object which thrills and hooks you in....

A while ago I travelled around Rajasthan in northern India. My journey took in walking through cities, riding in deserts, seeing magnificent old buildings, viewing wildlife, and most importantly meeting Indians....

The year has been filled with my colours of the rainbow: jade, turquoise, lime, magenta, saffron. The year is almost completed and I come back to a calm centre. All is flickering soft white light. No colour - just the pureness of white. -- Gazing upwards towards infinity the ancient curves of Cathedral stone embrace me. The space calms, restores, softens. The light surrounds me womb-like. Fully present in this moment the music breaks: 'O Magnum Mysterium'. Sensations fill my eyes, my ears, my heart with joy. The music soars. Far off necklaces of jewelled Christmas lights cast themselves in my mind into paint, light and colour. -- Out of white; colour. Out of peace; inspiration....

A chance encounter with YELLOW Anyone who knows me and my work knows that yellow is definitely not my favourite colour – or indeed a colour I have even given house room to before. However, when I looked bleary- eyed into the mirror one morning in late November, I had to confront a yellow face, yellow eyes, indeed a yellow ‘tan’ all over.  This was a relationship thrust upon me and I had to find a way to come to terms with it. Slip a little to the green side – and acid yellow, lime green are my absolute favourites, and indeed my paintings (and wardrobes!) are bursting with them – but cool lemony yellow and warm egg yolk yellow are rare guests in my paintings, and even rarer in my home. So yellow on a skin that really doesn’t suit yellow is pretty tricky.  Wear my usual lime or sludgy green and the clash jars painfully, wear purple and its complementary nature made me look even yellower than ever! So I made an even closer relationship with turquoise.  Calm, cool, bright and cheerful. ‘Painting’ - only this time I was using skin and clothing instead of canvas.  When the colours work that well together – it is cause for joy and celebration.  And I did – all Christmas long – with non-alcoholic wine!! (Just to reassure you – I’m nearly back to my normal colour again – and healthy :))   January 2017    ...
